Motivation Is the Key to Success—Tips to Motivate Yourself

image
You always hear the word motivation, especially in the workplace. Motivation is your drive to finish your tasks. Having the right motivation is the key to your success. If you are motivated, you are more efficient and productive in your office.

Most managers use motivation to encourage their employees or team to use their abilities as best as they can, which makes them more efficient and productive.

Being motivated also affects other people around you. People will be affected by the energy that you exude because you are motivated. This will have a positive effect in your workplace and also in your household because your co-workers and family members will be more productive.

On the other hand, lack of motivation can also make the people around you feel lazy and disinterested, which will lead to not having a lot of work done.

To keep yourself motivated, you need to remember the following tips.

1. Visualize your goals

Visualization is a technique that helps you see the end result of your hard work or your goals. Visualizing your goals can keep you motivated because it lets you see what is in store for you.

When you are feeling disheartened and unmotivated about your job, you can always focus on your ultimate goal for working, and that is to provide for your family’s needs and to make their life more comfortable.

To visualize the result, just close your eyes and let your mind wander to that place where you keep your goals in life tucked away. You need to see the whole experience. Since your goal is to give your family a comfortable life, you can visualize your spouse and kids living in a nice home, looking healthy and happy while eating a scrumptious dinner together.

You can also visualize having a sizeable bank account which you can use for traveling, shopping for yourself and your family, and doing things that you all want to do during your free time.

2. Give yourself rewards

Another important thing to keep yourself motivated is to give yourself rewards when you achieve small goals to reach your much bigger goal. Rewarding yourself is a good way to motivate yourself to finish your task and achieve the goal that you have in mind.

For example, if your goal is to lose your excess weight, you need to give yourself a reward (not food, hopefully) for every time that you weigh yourself and you find out that you are a few pounds lighter.

In some situations, there is already a reward when you reach your goal, like that medal that they give you when you finish a marathon (even though you are not the winner) or the additional income when you reached your goal of getting promoted. You can also reward yourself in the form of a celebration with your co-workers or family.

3. Develop a healthy competition

You should also consider starting a friendly competition with someone. For instance, if your goal is to de-clutter your house, you can challenge a friend who also needs to organize her house to do the same thing.

Whoever finishes first will be declared as the winner. You should discuss the prize with your friend before the competition starts. This will also serve as a kind of motivation for both of you to try your best to win.

Aside from starting a healthy competition with another person, you should also consider competing with yourself. This means that you should challenge yourself to become better.

For example, if you just started to learn how to cook, you should challenge yourself by cooking more difficult dishes as days go by. After all, you do not want to get stuck cooking only basic dishes that everyone knows how to cook.

4. Get up on the right side of the bed

Whether you are a morning person or not, you need to start your morning right to ensure that the rest of your day will go smoothly. Try your best not to be in a dark mood when you wake up.

This can be done if you repeat a mantra several times upon waking up. Mantras help put your mind in the right mood, especially in the morning. Every morning, you can say “today is a good day” or anything positive that will help you start your day right instead of moaning and complaining about waking up early and going to work.

5. Stop procrastinating

Procrastinating makes you feel less motivated. This is because you keep on putting off work that you end up feeling lazy to finish your task. You should have a sense of urgency for you to be able to keep yourself motivated. What you can do is to set a deadline for yourself as early as possible.

For example, if you are a work at home mom, you should set a deadline for yourself to finish all the chores in the morning and concentrate on your home-based job in the afternoon. This way, you will have plenty of time to relax and enjoy yourself at night.

6. Start with difficult tasks

This is a technique that is very effective, especially if you have multiple tasks that you need to finish in one day. For example, if you are a writer and you have several articles that you need to submit within the same day, you can start with articles that have the most difficult topics, like Forex or computer programming, before you move on to easier topics, like lifestyle and movies.

Starting with a difficult task is also effective because your mind is still fresh at the start of the day. As the day progresses, your mind becomes tired. This is why you should set the easiest tasks as the last ones to be finished.

7. Remember the time and effort that you have invested

Some people get discouraged while in the middle of a large project. This can be prevented if you remind yourself the amount of time and effort that you have invested in the project.

When you think about how much of your time and energy spent will go to waste if you stop doing your task, you will surely turn a complete 180 degrees to finish what you have started.
